Terrazzo, Tile and Marble Setters prepare bases, cover, protect, repair, and decorate exterior and interior walls, floors, ceilings, fireplaces, swimming pools, saunas, showers and other surfaces Tiling materials include ceramic, mosaics, quarry tile, slate, engineered stone, terrazzo, porcelain and marble or granite slabs.
Key Skills & Attributes
An apprentice should have good manual dexterity and an aptitude for mathematics in order to calculate angles and dimensions.
An apprentice should also have good oral and written communication skills, and physical fitness and stamina.
Grade 10 minimum
The apprentice will be trained to install materials for each category of terrazzo, tile, and natural stone. Training includes the principles of identifying and installing proper materials to exact specifications, and blueprint reading. Safety practices and procedures, a very important element of the trades, is also taught.
Uses and maintains electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic power tools
Interprets blueprints and specifications
Inspects and verifies materials and tools, and sets plumb, level, and square lines and surfaces
Installs terrazzo and tile
Performs mechanical installation of natural stone on walls
Installs natural stone indoors by conventional or stacking methods
Installs natural stone on floors and countertops
