Steamfitters work on heating or cooling pipe systems or process systems. They also work on industrial systems that convey gases, employ pneumatic tubing, involve air handling, and form the infrastructure of oil refineries and nuclear power plants. This work includes assembly, installation, maintenance, and repair.

Responsibilities

  • Install supports, valves, piping and control systems

  • Measure, cut, thread, bend and install metal, plastic and fiberglass pipes, valves and fittings

  • Cut openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipes & pipe fittings

  • Weld, cement, solder and join pipes and related equipment

  • Join pipes using clamps, bolts, cement or soldering, brazing and welding equipment

  • Read blueprints, drawings and specifications

  • Check systems for leaks & remove and replace worn components

Apprenticeship Program

9000 hours of on-the-job training, supplemented by three 8-week sessions of in-class technical training.

Entrance Requirements

  • High school transcript or high school diploma (equivalent GED)

  • Minimum 18 years of age

  • Required aptitude test

Journeyperson Wage Rate

$52.10/Hr (2024 Provincial Average)
