Steamfitters lay out, assemble, fabricate, maintain, and repair piping systems that carry water, steam, chemicals or fuel used in heating, cooling, lubricating and other processes.

Key Skills & Attributes

  • Strong communication, problem-solving, reading, and numeracy skills

  • Ability to interpret blueprints and codes

  • Ability to work at high elevations and in all weather conditions

  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment

  • Adept at using tools & machinery

Entrance Requirements

  • Grade 12 Diploma

  • Secondary School Math and Science (recommended to take in Grade 12)

  • Mechanical Aptitude Test

  • Valid Driver’s License

Apprenticeship Program

Approximately 5 years, 9,000 hours of technical and on-the-job training, and exam. Red seal trade certificate awarded after. As an apprentice, you can earn while you learn!


  • Using tools, equipment, and organization of work

  • Welding, flame cutting, and machining pipe to specific angle and lengths

  • Performing layout and fabrication of piping systems

  • Rigging, hoisting, and planning lifts with cranes

  • Interpretation of drawings and specifications

  • Installation of heating, cooling, steam, and process piping systems

  • Testing and commissioning mechanical piping systems

Journeyperson Wage Rate:

Wage packages starting at over $60/hr
