Painters and decorators (commercial/residential) apply paint, wallpaper and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and other structures. They are employed by construction companies, painting contractors and building maintenance departments, or they may be self-employed.

Entrance Requirements

  • Grade 10 minimum

Apprenticeship Program

Approximately 3-4 years, includes 6,000 hours of technical training and on-the-job training, and exam. Red Seal certification awarded after successful completion. As an apprentice, you also earn while you learn.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints & specifications

  • Repair, clean and prepare surfaces

  • Mix coatings according to manufacturer’s specification

  • Select, mix and thin paints and stains to produce the desired colour & appearance

  • Apply coatings using brushes, rollers or spray equipment

  • Put up scaffolding and set up ladders

Journeyperson Wage Rate:

$14.00 – $43.00
